2026 Declared the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. However, their prevalence has markedly exploded in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this rise, I performed a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's elevated place in the broader culture is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming appears especially strong.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have inherent design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues lend themselves to a host of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.
When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be on the verge of a true amphibian entertainment revival.
