Exposing Venezuelan Victory Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.
Synthetic graphics claiming to portray Venezuela's president detained after his capture by the United States have gained tens of millions of views on social media.
How Fake Pictures of Maduro Surfaced Soon After
Initial inauthentic synthetic picture apparently displaying him taken off a aircraft emerged shortly after. The picture was absent from any official government accounts; it was instead posted on X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Verification involved the SynthID tool, which found the image was created or altered with generative AI.
More synthetic visuals began to spread in the following hours, appearing to show additional perspectives of Maduro in custody. Visible identifying marks on these images reveal they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
SynthID indicates the further pictures were similarly produced using AI technology.
Authentic Image Released but Fakes Continued
The former US president released the initial authentic image of Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. But even after the authentic image was released, synthetic images continued to spread but were updated to include the grey tracksuit worn by Maduro.
Digital forensics reveal these altered fabrications were initially shared on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector confirms these further images were created or altered Google AI.
Main Takeaways:
- Synthetic media circulated quickly following the events of Maduro's capture.
- The first fake image appeared on the same day on platform X.
- Detection software like AI-watermark detectors were used to verify the pictures as synthetic.
- Fabrications persisted to circulate and evolve even after the publication of real images.
- The source of several fakes was linked to specific online accounts dedicated to AI art.
